Types of Concerts:
During each season, there are a total of 6 concerts in the regular series. There is always a theme to each concert. The theme is based on the pieced that are lined up for each concert. Each year, the programming department tries to find a balance for choosing pieces between accepted “classical” pieces to unknown “new modern” pieces. It is the orchestra’s job is not to only entertain the audience, but they also need to educate them beyond just knowing the classics.
In addition to the normal series concerts, there are usually three family concerts per season. Introduced in the year 2000, these concerts are aimed towards children. To engage the children’s attention more, the concerts are intertwined with stories. The stories can be musical stories, stories of composers, or stories that give a history about the music that is being played. The pieces that are played are shorter compared to the normal orchestra repertoire and they are more well-known. There are also arranged activities for the children before the concerts.
Started during the 2005-2006 season, the KinderConcerts are for children between the ages of 2-5. This is a short 30 minute concert. During the 30 minutes, the children listen to fun short pieces and they are encouraged to interact and to express what they feel. The concert also includes storytelling. There are three concerts per season, and they are held at the public libraries. There is no fee.
Matinee Musicale Series are recitals given by the string, woodwind, and brass ensembles. These recitals are played for mainly senior citizens. They are held at the Jewish Community Center.
